Daniel Akaka (D-HI) is hoping to bring his bill to give tribal status to native Hawaiins, the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act, to a vote on the Senate floor before Memorial Day. The bill would provide a process for reorganizing the Native Hawaiian governing entity so that the United States, the state of Hawaii, and the Native Hawaiian governing entity can negotiate the transfer of lands and natural resources, and the role of governmental authority over any transfered lands.
